Selecting the Best College to Realise Your BMM Dream

You join Graduation College after you’re done with HSC; that is you seek admission in Graduation College in the ‘developing phase’ of your life. It’s a phase wherein, just like young kids, you learn whatever is taught to you. However, the difference this time round is that you don’t simply learn whatever you see or hear but you rather ‘follow’ whatever ‘attracts you’ or all that is ‘in vogue’. In short, you tend to develop a herd mentality and at the same time you discover the rebel in you who craves to carve his/her own path.

Your personality stands to get influenced by your immediate surroundings, the people you interact with, etc. In the initial days of college, you are like the chicken that has just broken free from its shell; a newbie who is eager to learn new things and walk with the world. There definitely are many other things that influence your personality, but you spend most of your time in college and here is where your life perspectives are shaped. It is in the college campus that you ‘hang out’ with your friends, be it after lectures or even by bunking lectures! Thus, the college campus has a lot to do with how you behave and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the college culture does inevitably become your culture.

The above logic holds true in the case of BMM students as well. Most of the times you’ll find only a bunch of students hanging out and about in college after everyone has gone home and those will invariably be BMM students. Either they will be busy making presentations, or practicing for a play, or xeroxing notes for an up-coming exam. On a lighter note, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that a typical BMM student spends half her/his time either taking notes or designing PowerPoint presentations! And both these activities require one to stay back in college for long hours. Thedemands of the course in terms of the time you have to invest in what you do, is what makes choosing the right college extremely essential. Your campus is going to be your home for three years, so it is up to you to ensure you find yourself a very good home!

Also, the extra-curricular activities in your college play a major part in moulding your personality. The exposure that these extra-curricular activities promise is something that every BMM-ite is sure to benefit from. These will help you know your strengths, will push your potential to the limits and get you to be out-going and wise-in-the-ways-of-the-world in general. Therefore, if a college doesn’t participate in or organise many activities then it is advisable to stay clear of such a college. It is also important that the college you select organises its own BMM festival. It is in this fest that you will learn the nitty-gritty’s of organising a large scale event, of getting sponsors on board, of handling logistics and so on. Hence, presence of and active participation in your college fest is vital.

Debates, group discussions, interactions with the visiting faculty, cultural events, sports events, plays, youth festivals: all of these play a major role in shaping and nurturing your personality and thought process. In the end, it would suffice to say that the college you choose plays a pivotal role in your BMM experience. So, study hard and aim for the best.

CMC Vellore ranked among top medical colleges

CMC Vellore ranked among top medical colleges
The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore was adjudged the runner-up in India Today's annual survey of the best medical colleges 2012.

While All India Institute of Medical Sciences topped the list, CMC founded by American medical missionary Dr Ida Sophia Scudder ranked second, followed by JIPMER, Puducherry, and Armed Forces Medical College, Pune.

"CMC has gained immensely from the synergy of a well-reputed hospital, established consciously away from any major city, and run with tremendous commitment," India Today wrote, adding that 2,000 students are enrolled in 150 different postgraduate courses in the medical, nursing and allied health disciplines.

One of the leading magazines in the country, India Today noted that the alumni of the century-old Christian institution had several public health specialists, including civil rights activist Binayak Sen and Magsaysay Award winner Rajnikant Arole.

In this mercenary age, CMC still produces medical professionals ready to offer unflinching public service to the nation, the magazine remarked.

CMC started in the year 1900. The internationally reputed medical college “seeks to be a witness to the healing ministry of Christ, through excellence in education, service and research”.

"We are conscious of the gap that exists between what we are and what we would be, so we continue to strive to ensure that our growth in size and numbers is matched by a growth in the depth of our caring and commitment, in our effectiveness, our sensitivity and our reaching out," the director of CMC Vellore, Dr Suranjan Bhattacharji was quoted saying.

Besides CMC, another Christian medical institution featured in the India Today Nielsen survey. St John's Medical College, Bangalore, run by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, was listed as the ninth best medical college in India.

In addition to medical colleges, the India Today survey also listed the best colleges in the Arts, Commerce, Science, Law, Medicine, Engineering, BBA and BCA categories.

While Christ University, Bangalore topped the BBA and BCA categories, St. Stephen's College, Delhi ranked first in Science and second in Arts. Further, the Arts category had St. Xavier's College, Mumbai ranked third, Loyola College, Chennai ranked fourth, St. Xavier's College, Kolkata ranked fifth and Christ College, Bangalore listed sixth.

The present IIM Trichy campus

The present IIM Trichy campus
IIM Tiruchirapalli  (IIMT) will be opening a new campus in Chennai.  According to details available, a new building has been taken over in the Guindy, which is considered prime real estate in Chennai and is the entry point  to the city from the southern parts of Tamil Nadu and south-western areas of Chennai. The new programme will have  an intake of 60 students and the course will start in August. It will be primarily aimed at working executives and classes will be held on weekends and evenings (6-9.00pm) so candidates do not have to quit their jobs.

The space acquired for the new campus is all of 13,000 square feet and the academic year will begin with a few classrooms, canteen and a library.  The Chennai campus will offer three-year executive programmes which will be titled Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) and be based on IIM Trichy’s Post Graduate Programme (PGP).

This acquisition comes close on the heels of IIM Kozhikode starting a new campus in Cochin, also with working executives in mind.

The fees fixed for the new programme is Rs 9-10 lakhs and a facility of paying up in installments has also been worked out. The programme will consist of 18 core courses, 14 elective courses and 1 industry project spread over 3 years. Apparently, the idea to run a second campus came out of the fact that Trichy, though well-connected by air, bus and road is still considered ‘unapproachable’ and Chennai is more suitable for working executives. The Chennai campus is also expected to hold a few activities like placements and admissions of both the campuses in the months to come because of its easy accessibility.

While some modalities have yet to be worked out, the Chennai campus will look at admitting executives with minimum three years of work-ex and a good academic background. IIM Trichy is the eleventh IIM to be set up in the country and started its operation a year ago. IIM Trichy also has 15 permanent faculty and also one permanent international faculty – the latter  is a rarity even in many of the older IIMs.

Incidentally, in Trichy itself, the institute has decided to build a new campus at a cost of  Rs 200 crore. IIMT is temporarily functioning out of the National Institute of Technology-Tiruchy (NITT) campus. The new Trichy campus will be ready by 2014.
